Cardinal Grec: a call to listen to the Holy Spirit

The Synod of Bishops invoked the Holy Spirit before the final document was drawn up.

Cardinal Mario Grec, secretary of the Synod of Bishops, celebrated the Mass of the Holy Spirit in St. Peter’s Basilica.

In his homily during the Mass, Cardinal Mario said that Jesus does not divide but rather invites us to seek communion, seeing greed and the pursuit of power as the root of division.

The Cardinal said that we arrived at the last stop of the Synod to collect the fruits of our long journey. “Let us accumulate not only material things but also the good and beautiful things in common that Jesus has given us, while warning us against greed.”

live together

Reflecting on the daily liturgy readings, the Cardinal said: “We are tempted to go off with our own things, but Jesus doesn’t want that, he wants them to stay together.” Today’s parable shows us, he said, how to prepare ourselves to be able to reap the fruits of our synodal path and our assembly, without dividing ourselves, but seeking unity.

Reflecting further on the parable, the Cardinal said that in these three years the Synod has given us abundant fruits. Our journey has been fruitful where we have seen many gifts among us. As disciples of the risen Lord “in our weaknesses God has made his power known.”

Reflecting on the Gospel, Cardinal Graeco said that in times of abundant harvest the owner says to himself: “What should I do? I don’t have enough space to store the grain.” He is thinking about demolishing his old store and building a new, larger one. It tells his soul that you have many riches, eat, drink and rejoice. “He does not think about investing, about expanding his horizons, about making his assets fruitful, but only about living his own life from his profits. He rejoices in his perfection.

gifts from god

The cardinal said that we too run the risk that without investing the gifts that God has given us, without accumulating them, without living them as gifts from God, we will ruin our Church and the world. We can wear our things as a show off.

To prevent this from happening, we must heed the words of Jesus Christ, said Cardinal Mario. “Be careful and avoid all kinds of greed, because man’s life is not safe with what he has, even if he has more than enough.” He said: “Let us avoid greed, let us not keep the money we receive just for ourselves.” Let us avoid the temptation that this is not our earned money, but rather we have received it as a gift from God.

follow the holy spirit

The Cardinal invited the participants in the Synod to follow the path of the Holy Spirit because it is He who brings newness to our lives. “In the parable the man only listens to himself and speaks to himself. We need to have communion with the Holy Spirit individually and communally. Let us allow ourselves to be illuminated by Him and wait for His sign that reveals us.

Just risk your hearing

He warned that if we only listen to ourselves and stay within ourselves, we will be left without hope for ourselves. “Little by little, everything we have accumulated will disappear, while if we listen to the Holy Spirit, we do listen to him. , we will be able to recognize and discover new paths.” Listening to the Holy Spirit will give us a new beginning at the Synod, which will “fulfill the gospel and glorify the divine name.”

At the end of his homily, the Cardinal appealed to Mary, to whom the work of the Synod is dedicated: “If we know how to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit and live in the freedom of the Spirit, we will be able to sing in praise of the Lord the hymn with which He tells us to the prophet Isaiah: “This is our God.” There was confidence in it. It saves us. This is God, I had faith in Him. Let us rejoice with joy because He gives us freedom.”
