Tension increases between Iran and Germany
Tension increases between Iran and Germany over the hanging of German citizen Jamshed Sharmahed. While on Tuesday Germany had recalled its ambassador in Tehran, on Thursday the German Government ordered the closure of three Iranian consulates.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stated that the government decided to close the Iranian consulates in Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich. After this, Iran only has its embassy in Berlin left. Tension between both countries is at its peak following the hanging of German-Iranian citizen Jamshed Sharmahed.
Demand for major actions against the IRGC
A Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Sharmhad’s execution has put a lot of pressure on diplomatic relations between Berlin and Tehran. Expressing its opposition to this action by Iran, Germany has already recalled its ambassador in Tehran and also formally expressed its opposition.

Additionally, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Thursday called on the European Union (EU) to list Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. In early 2019, the United States had declared the IRGC a terrorist organization and the latest country to join this list was Canada.
Why was Jamshed Sharmahad hanged?
Jamshid Sharmahed was a German-Iranian citizen, born in Tehran in 1955, but grew up in the western German city of Hanover. Sharmahad had dual citizenship of Iran and Germany. In 2007, while working as a software developer, his connection to a website that wanted to overthrow the Iranian government was revealed during a cyberattack.
Jamshed Sharmahad has a deep connection with both Iran and the United States; has lived in the US state of California for a long time. Iran claims that Sharmhad had plotted to carry out the 2008 terrorist attack on a mosque, which killed 14 people.
There is an allegation that Iranian security forces kidnapped Jamshed Sharmahed in Dubai in 2020 and took him to Tehran. In 2023 he was sentenced to death on charges of corruption on Earth, after which Iran hanged him on October 28.
