Pope Francis has expressed his condolences to the family of Cardinal Renato Raffaele Martino, who died on October 28 at the age of 91.

In a telegram sent to the brother of the late cardinal, Pope Francis expressed his closeness to his entire family, as well as to the archdiocese of Salerno-Campania-Acherno, where Cardinal Martino “had been a respected priest.”

The Pope expressed his gratitude for the “long and diligent cooperation of the zealous bishop.” He highlighted his work as an apostolic ambassador in some Asian countries, as well as before the United Nations, “where he left no stone unturned to demonstrate the Pope’s paternal concern for humanity.”

Cardinal Martino also served as President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. “In the various functions entrusted to him, he worked with great dynamism for the well-being of the people, constantly promoting dialogue and harmony,” the Pope stated.

At the end of the telegram, the Pope prayed that the Lord would welcome “his faithful servant” into heavenly Jerusalem. “And he expressed his gratitude to those who cared for the late cardinal.”
