Pope Francis called on the political and social authorities of the Amazon province to protect the fundamental rights of the indigenous Yanomami people who live between the border between Venezuela and Brazil.

After praying the Angelus following the canonization liturgy on October 20, Pope Francis said: “I urge the political and social authorities to take into account the actions carried out in the provinces with respect to the fundamental rights of the indigenous Yanomami people. and their human dignity. exploitation.”

Drawing attention to the newly declared Saint Giuseppe Allamano, the Pope said he reminds us as Christians that we must be responsible and care for those who are vulnerable or weak.

The Yanomami are a group of approximately 35,000 indigenous people who live between 200 and 250 villages in the province of Amazonia, located between Venezuela and Brazil.

According to human rights groups, illegal gold mining often occurs on Yanomami lands, causing mercury poisoning and numerous social and environmental problems in many communities.

Remembrance of those affected by war

During the mass, the Pope reiterated his commitment to Christians, calling them to pray for peace and remember those who are victims of war and violence.

“Let us continue to pray for those who suffer because of war: for martyred Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, martyred Ukraine, Sudan, Myanmar and other countries, let us invoke the gift of peace for all,” he said.

The Holy Father recalled the theme of World Mission Day: “Go and invite everyone to the party.” He said that every Christian is called to participate in the universal apostolate by proclaiming the Gospel, so that we can all be “joyfully united to the Lord.”

“Let us support with our prayers and help all the apostles who make great sacrifices to proclaim the brilliant message of the Gospel in all parts of the earth.”
