A large number of people travel by train throughout the country. Have you ever wondered how many liters of drinking water are consumed on a train per day? The central government has given this information in Parliament. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that around 13 lakh liters of ‘Rail Neer’ bottled drinking water are supplied daily to train passengers of the railway network.

The quality of drinking water is monitored periodically.

While briefing Lok Sabha on Indian Railways’ efforts to provide safe drinking water facilities at all stations, the government also provided zone-wise details about water vending machines (WVMs) installed there. The Railway Minister said that there are instructions to check from time to time and take necessary corrective measures to ensure the quality of drinking water supplied at railway stations.

Complaints are resolved immediately.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, replying to a question raised by BJP MP Anup Sanjay Dhotre on drinking water supply at railway stations across the country, said, “Drinking water facilities are inspected and maintained periodically. Complaints are resolved immediately.

Through what channels are complaints received?

Complaints about deficiencies in services, including water supply, are received through various channels such as web portals, social networks, etc. These complaints are received at various levels including Railway Board, Zonal Railways, Divisional Office etc.

Complaints received are forwarded to the concerned section of the Railways. Necessary actions are taken to investigate and address them. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said, “Receipt of such complaints and action taken on them is a continuous and dynamic process, hence no centralized repository of them is maintained.”

954 water vending machines were installed

Providing information on zone-wise water vending machines, the minister said that 954 such machines have been installed at railway stations. Vaishnav said, ‘Indian Railways also provides safe and affordable packaged drinking water bottles – Rail Neer, approved by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in trains and stations. Around 13 lakh liters of Rail Neer are supplied daily to passengers traveling in trains and stations of the Indian Railway network.
