ranchi: Hemant Soren’s wife Kalpana Soren won a major victory in Gandey assembly constituency by 17,142 votes. Despite falling behind BJP’s Munniya Devi in the opening round, Kalpana made a strong comeback and won. Kalpana got a total of 119,372 votes, while the BJP had to be content with 102,230 votes. Here a dispute was seen between the two parties. No third party could obtain more than 2760.
He had also won the by-election.
Kalpana’s victory has further strengthened his growing influence in Jharkhand politics. He had earlier entered the political arena through the Gandey by-election following Hemant Soren’s legal troubles. Kalpana had won the by-election held on June 4 from the seat vacated after the resignation of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) MLA Sarfaraz Ahmed. He defeated Dilip Kumar Verma of the BJP by 27,149 votes.
