A surprising case has come to light in Kerala. According to information received from the police, a case has been registered against four doctors in the state for failing to detect a genetic disorder in a newborn. Police said the doctors involved include two women doctors from Cuddapuram Government Women and Children’s Hospital in Alappuzha and two doctors from a private testing laboratory.
Police said an FIR was registered on Tuesday based on a complaint by an Alappuzha couple, Anish and Surumi. The four doctors have been booked under various sections of the Indian Justice Code (BNS), including endangering life or personal safety of others. The two doctors charged in the case ran two scanning centers. The state health department also ordered an investigation into the matter.
No genetic disorder has been detected
Health Minister Veena George said a special team led by the additional director of the health department will investigate allegations that a genetic disorder was not detected in the baby during prenatal check-up at the Alappuzha Women and Children’s Hospital. According to the information, investigations are already being carried out at the district level.
Scanning centers related to the case will also participate in the investigation. The minister said that if any lapse is discovered during the investigation, strict action will be taken against those responsible.” The couple alleged that the doctor did not detect the genetic disorder during the prenatal check-up and instead assured them that the report was normal. According to the complaint, the couple also claimed they were shown the baby just four days after the birth.
The couple told this in the FIR.
The FIR said Surumi (35) was admitted to the Cuddapuram Women and Children’s Hospital to give birth on October 30. The couple said that due to lack of movement and heartbeat, the baby was sent to the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) at Vandanam in Alappuzha. In such a situation, a boy was born on November 8 after surgery at MCH and a genetic disorder was found in him. In response to the allegations, one of the accused doctors said that he had treated Surumi only during the first month of pregnancy.
