Kumbh Mela 2025
According to Hindu religion, when Lord Jupiter enters Aquarius and Sun God enters Aries, Kumbh Mela is organized. Kumbh Mela of Prayagraj has the most importance among all the fairs. Kumbh means Kalash. In astrology, Aquarius also has this symbol. Maha Kumbh Mela is celebrated every 12 years on the banks of four major rivers: Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari and Shipra. Furthermore, the Kumbh Mela is celebrated only in the four holy cities of Prayagraj, Ujjain, Haridwar and Nashik.
This year the Mahakumbh Mela will begin in Prayagraj from January 13 and will end on February 26, the day of Mahashivratri. Many people wonder why Kumbh Mela is held in only 4 pilgrimage sites i.e. Prayagraj, Nashik, Ujjain and Haridwar. There is a religious belief that its motif is related to the churning of nectar.
Why Kumbh Mela is celebrated in Prayagraj, Ujjain, Haridwar and Nashik?
According to mythology, during the churning of the ocean, many gems along with nectar and poison came out of the ocean. The gods and demons decided to divide all these things among themselves. During Samudra Manthan, there was a 12-day fight between gods and demons to get the precious pot of nectar. To save the nectar vessel from the demons, Lord Vishnu gave the vessel to his vehicle Garuda.
It is believed that during this fight, when the demons tried to snatch this vessel of nectar from Garuda, some of its drops fell in 12 places, of which four were on the earth and eight in the sky. These 4 places on earth were Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. It is said that drops of nectar had fallen in these four places and that the rivers there had turned into nectar. For this reason, pilgrims from all over the world come to the Kumbh Mela to bathe and the Kumbh Mela is organized in these 4 places.
