When it comes to recruitment for teaching positions, there seems to be no recruitment in university faculties, but now the Minister of Education has spoken openly. He said that more than 5,000 teaching positions are vacant in central universities across the country alone. Union Minister of State for Education Sukant Majumdar gave this information in response to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
More than 7,650 positions were filled
Majumdar said, “As on October 31, there were 5,182 vacant teaching posts in central universities. However, more than 7,650 posts in central universities have been filled up through the special recruitment drive. It is a continuous process to have vacant posts and fill them. The positions arise due to additional needs due to retirements, resignations and increase in the student population. The responsibility of filling the positions falls on the Central Universities.
Monitoring of UGC and ministries
Majumdar further said that the ministry and the University Grants Commission (UGC) regularly monitor the institutions and the central universities have also been directed to fill vacancies regularly. It further said, “UGC launched a unified recruitment portal called CU-Select in May 2023 to provide a common platform for listing of vacancies/advertisements/jobs across all central universities.”
25,777 positions have been hired
Please note that as of October 29, 2024, Central University has hired 25,777 positions, including 15,139 teaching positions in mission mode. These include the recruitment of 3,089 teachers from Other Backward Classes, 1,869 from Scheduled Castes and 739 Scheduled Tribes.
