Thakur Ramveer Singh and Haji Rizwan
Counting of by-elections to nine Uttar Pradesh assembly seats continues. The results of the Muslim-dominated Kundarki election in western Uttar Pradesh have surprised everyone. In this seat held by the SP for a long time, the BJP is moving towards victory by giving a big surprise or one can say that the official announcement of the victory of the BJP candidate is yet to be made. According to the data till 1 pm, BJP candidate from Kundarki Thakur Ramveer Singh is leading with around 85 thousand votes.
He has attributed this increase to Muslims’ trust in him. He told TV9: “Since I didn’t even get a fine, the Muslims were one-sided. The Muslims had decided that this time they should give Ramveer a chance.” He further said that Muslims have broken the barriers of religion and caste and voted for the BJP.
While the results seem to indicate that Ramveer has managed to win the trust of Muslims, the SP has alleged that Muslims were not allowed to vote and that the vote was rigged. SP candidate Haji Rizwan had alleged that the voting for the Kundarki seat was not based on democracy but on monarchical politics.
Why did Muslims vote for the BJP?
Thakur Ramveer Singh says this election happened in his face. Ramveer Singh has been contesting elections from this seat since 2007. Describing the support of Muslims, he says, “In 2007, Muslims gave me 2,500 votes, in 2012 it increased to 5,000, in 2017 it increased to 25,000 and then to 75,000. ”.
How many Muslims and how many Hindus vote in the seat?
The total votes in Kundarki seat is 3,80,000. There are 250,000 Muslim voters here, while the number of Hindu voters is 120,000 and there are another 10,000. In these by-elections, around 57 percent of the votes have been cast. In the last election, the BJP candidate here got a total of 82 thousand votes and was defeated, while in this by-election, the BJP candidate is considered to have got more than one lakh votes.
