The test series between New Zealand and England has begun. The first Test Match of the 3-match Test series will be played at Hagley Oval, Christchurch from November 28. After winning the toss, England invited the host Kiwi team to bat first. New Zealand got off to a great start on day one. At the end of the first day of play, New Zealand had put 319 runs on the scoreboard after losing 8 wickets. On the second day, the New Zealand team was reduced to 348 runs in the first session. In response to this, England’s start to the innings was very poor. The English team lost their 3 wickets with just 45 runs.
Opener Jack Collie couldn’t even open his account and fell victim to Matt Henry in the fourth over. While debutant all-rounder Jacob Bethel failed in his first match. Bethel scored only 10 runs. Following this, No. 1 Test batsman Joe Root came onto the field to bat but returned to the pavilion without opening his account. Root had a great chance to play a big innings in his 150th Test match, but he could only face four balls and was bowled by Nathan Smith. In this way a shameful record was recorded in the name of Joe Root.
In fact, Joe Root has become the third player in the world to run out in his 150th Test match. Previously, this has happened to two batsmen in the history of Test cricket and both of them belonged to Australia. Before Root, former Australian captain Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting had returned to the pavilion after going out for a duck in their respective 150th Test matches. Steve Waugh had made this bad record in the year 2002, while this happened with Ponting in 2010.
Players who went for a duck in their 150th test
- Steve Waugh (Australia vs Pakistan) – Sharjah, 2002 (1st ball)
- Ricky Ponting (Australia vs England) – Adelaide, 2010 (1st ball)
- Joe Root (England vs New Zealand) – Christchurch, 2024 (fourth ball)
Joe Root was left out for the eighth time in the history of the World Test Championship. He has become the sixth batsman in the world to lose 8 or more times in the WTC. In this matter, Mominul Haq of Bangladesh occupies the first position. Haq has been out 10 times so far.
Highest number of ducks in World Trials Championship (WTC) history
Mominul Haq (Bangladesh) – 10 (54 innings)
Rory Burns (England) – 8 (38 innings)
Kusal Mendis (Sri Lanka) – 8 (45 innings)
Jason Holder (West Indies) – 8 (56 innings)
Jack Crawley (England) – 8 (81 innings)
Joe Root (England) – 8 (112 innings)*
