Nanded Lok Sabha seat
Counting of votes will begin shortly in the by-elections held in the Nanded Lok Sabha seat in Maharashtra. Initial trends are expected to emerge here soon. This seat fell vacant due to the death of Congress MP Vasantrao Chavan. Like Nanded, counting of votes for the by-election in Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala will also begin at 8 o’clock today.
Congress MP Vasantrao Chavan died in August 2024, barely two months after the Lok Sabha elections. The Congress has nominated his son Ravindra Chavan as its candidate. While BJP has fielded Dr. Santuk Humbarde.
The Congress had won in the Lok Sabha elections
Earlier, in the Lok Sabha elections held in April-May, there was a contest between outgoing BJP MP Prataprao Patil Chikhlikar and Congress candidate Vasant Chavan for the Nanded Lok Sabha seat. Nanded is one of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in the state and is also a district.
In the 2019 parliamentary elections, this seat went to the BJP and Prataprao Govindrao Chikhlikar became the MP. Chikhalkar got 4,86,806 votes, while Congress’s Ashok Chavan got 4,46,658 votes.
There are 6 assembly seats under Nanded. Lok Sabha elections were held from this seat for the first time in 1952, when Congress candidate Shankarrao Telkikar won. Then, in the 1957 elections, the Congress nominated Devrao Namdevrao Kamble and he emerged victorious. In 1962, Tulsidas Jadhav of Congress won. In the 1967 elections, the Congress changed its candidate and fielded Venkatrao Tirodkar, who also emerged victorious.
