India’s current term on the Commission would end on December 31.
India has been re-elected as a member of the United Nations Peacekeeping Commission (PBC) for the term 2025-2026, the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations said on Thursday in a post on social media platform ‘ X’. As a founding member and major contributor to UN peacekeeping, India is committed to continuing its engagement with the PBC to work for global peace and stability. They are elected from the Security Council and the Economic and Social Council. The main countries that contribute funds and troops to the United Nations system are also its members.
India’s greatest contribution
India is one of the largest contributors of uniformed personnel to UN peacekeeping forces. India currently has around 6,000 military and police personnel deployed in Abyei, Central African Republic, Cyprus, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lebanon, Middle East, Somalia, South Sudan and Western Sahara as part of UN operations. Nearly 180 Indian peacekeepers have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty in peacekeeping operations, the greatest sacrifice ever made by any other country as a taxpayer. (Language)
