In Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh, a woman was digitally arrested by cybercriminals for 48 hours and defrauded of Rs 2.9 lakh. Following the woman’s complaint, the police have registered an FIR in the matter. Giving information on Tuesday, officials said that an investigation is underway into the matter.
According to a news agency, Additional SP Kalu Singh said that Srishti Mishra, a resident of Sonbhadra, informed the police on October 18 that she had received a call from an unknown number on October 9. He was asked to press 9 on the keypad, after which his call was transferred. He was then told that a person had been arrested for committing a fraud of Rs 38 lakh using his phone number.

‘Digital arrest’ held for 48 hours
The caller then told them that 10 percent of the defrauded amount had been transferred to their account. The woman was told she was under “digital arrest” until the investigation continued. The ASP further said that Mishra was kept in “digital arrest” for 48 hours and threatened with legal action if he did not transfer the amount. He then paid Rs 2 lakh 94 thousand 262 to the accused.
Based on the complaint, an FIR under the provisions of the IT Act was registered at Chopan police station on October 18 and a detailed investigation into the matter is underway.
