There is a constant buzz regarding the retention of players for the IPL 2025 season, but amidst all this comes the most shocking and pleasing news for Royal Challengers Bangalore fans. Virat Kohli, who captained Bengaluru in IPL until three seasons ago, can be seen leading the team once again. This huge claim came to light before the IPL retention deadline, according to which Kohli has decided to captain Bengaluru again. Now, whether this will happen or not will be known only after the mega auction to be held in November.

Kohli expressed his intentions – report

This statement about Virat Kohli’s captaincy was made in an ESPN-Cricinfo video, where the IPL retention was discussed. In this video it is said that Virat Kohli has expressed his heartfelt feelings to the RCB management and has expressed his desire to captain the team again. Kohli captained RCB for 9 consecutive seasons, but due to their failure to win the title, he resigned after the 2021 season. Since then, Faf Du Plessis took charge of the team for three consecutive seasons.

RCB looking for captain

Bengaluru’s chances of retaining Duplessis for next season appear to be very slim. In such a situation, it is continuously being claimed that RCB is considering making KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant or Shreyas Iyer the captain of the team through a mega auction. Here too the name of Rahul stands out, who spent a few seasons in Bengaluru at the beginning of his career. But now, with this latest report, all the claims appear to be wrong. If Kohli has truly expressed his desire to be captain, then RCB is unlikely to reject him because despite his captaincy record, Kohli is the identity of the franchise.

He couldn’t win the title in 9 years.

If we talk about Virat’s captaincy record in IPL, he completely took over the responsibility of captaincy in the 2013 season but could not make the team win the title even once. Under his captaincy, the franchise played the final only once in 2016, where they lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad. Kohli captained a total of 143 matches, of which the team won only 66 and lost 70. As far as the last 3 seasons are concerned, under the captaincy of Duplessis, the team made it to the playoffs in 2022 and 2024 but he lost it in 2023.
