digital arrest and cybercrimes in India: PM Modi warned, CERT-In told… How to avoid such online frauds including ‘digital arrest’? – Scammers use fear and urgency to scam people through digital arrest Indian Cyber Security Agency opnm2

In view of rising cases of online fraud, including ‘digital arrest’, Indian cybersecurity agency ‘CERT-In’ issued an advisory on Sunday. It explains more than a dozen ways scammers commit online fraud. On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also warned against such fraud in his show ‘Mann Ki Baat’.

The Computer Emergency Response Team of India (CERT-In) has said that ‘Digital Arrest’ is an online scam. Government agencies never use platforms like WhatsApp or Skype. In these fraud cases, victims receive a phone call, email, or message stating that they are under investigation for illegal activities, such as theft or money laundering.

After this, the online scammer threatens the victim with arrest or legal action if they do not take immediate action. Creates panic within the victim. He is then forced to transfer money to help him get out of this case. But at a time like this no one should worry or panic. In such cases, whoever gets scared can lose a huge amount of money.

In this advisory it was emphasized that people should not transfer money under any pressure. It says, “If someone demands money over the phone or online, it is most likely a scam. It is important to remain alert and informed to protect yourself from this emerging cyber threat, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself spoke about on the show.” . Mann Ki Baat’.

Prime Minister Modi said online scams have affected all sections of the society. When this happens, you have a mantra that says, “Stop, think, and act.” Investigative agencies are working with states to address this issue, but awareness is important to protect ourselves from this crime. The Prime Minister said: “Beware of scams like digital arrest.”

No investigative agency ever communicates over phone or video call to conduct such investigation. In such a situation, one should call the National Cyber Security Helpline number 1930 or inform the police at www.cybercrime.gov.in. Other online frauds such as phishing scams, lottery scams, etc. are also mentioned in this notice.

Apart from this, people are also fooled through online dating scams, job scams, tech help scams, and investment scams. Investment scam is very common in this. Cyber bullies get people to invest by promising them big returns, then they scam them out of their money and run away. In cash on delivery scams, criminals create fake online stores.

In this, people accept cash on delivery orders. Then they cheat money by delivering counterfeit products. Additionally, scammers create credible websites or social media profiles soliciting donations for fake causes, such as disaster relief or health initiatives. Use these images or stories to see which people get excited and transfer money to them.
