Diwali 2024: ‘Double crisis’ in Delhi, air is poisonous and water is also scarce, what is the reason?

Water crisis deepens in Delhi

Diwali is near, so apart from cleaning, preparations are slowly starting. The markets have also begun to be decorated with lights and firecrackers. Amidst all this, poisonous air is a big problem for the people of Delhi. There may be water shortage in Delhi even after Diwali. The reason behind this is the significant increase in ammonia level in the Yamuna river. Apart from this, maintenance work is also being carried out on the Upper Ganga Canal.

In such a situation, on the occasion of Diwali, Delhiites have been asked to spend water cautiously. The ppm amount in the Yamuna river has reached 1.5. In such a situation, it is very difficult to use this water. The ongoing works on the Ganges Canal began on October 12 and will continue until October 31. Only after this the water supply can be started from here.

Water supply stopped at 250 ODM

Due to ongoing works on Ganga canal, 250 MDG water supply through Sonia Vihar and Bhagirathi water plant has been stopped. Due to rising ammonia level in Yamuna, only 30 per cent of the water comes from both plants. Due to this, water crisis has arisen in Delhi.

In what areas did the problem increase?

Due to these maintenance works, there is water shortage in East Delhi. Apart from Shahadara, Seelampur, Babarpur, Maujpur, more than 40 areas are included. The water problem persists in the colonies of Ambedkar Nagar, Okhla, Kalkaji, Kalkaji Extension, Govindpuri, GB Pant Polytechnic, Shyam Nagar Colony, Okhla Sabzi Mandi, Amar Colony, Dakshin Puri, Panchsheel Park, Shahpur Jat, Kotla Mubarakpur.

Breathing became difficult due to the pollution.

The ICA in Delhi has reached a very poor category. Air conditions had already worsened before Diwali. Currently, the AQI level in most areas of Delhi is above 380. In such a situation, the chances of it getting worse after Diwali have increased.
