According to the story described in the scriptures, in ancient times, the supremacy of King Bali extended throughout the three worlds. King Bali was not only a great warrior but also a charitable person. Because of this, there was discussion about King Bali in the three worlds. During this time, King Bali attacked heaven and removed Indra Dev from office. After wresting power from him, the heavenly king Indradev began to wander. At that time, Indra’s mother Aditi approached Lord Vishnu, the creator of the world, and narrated her ordeal to him.

Seeing mother Aditi sad, Lord Vishnu said: O mother! Don’t worry at all. In the future I will be born from your womb. At that time, Indra Dev will regain the throne of heaven again. Therefore, you should be happy and wait for the right time. Later, Mother Aditi worshiped Lord Vishnu intensely and, satisfied with Mother Aditi’s devotion, Lord Vishnu took the incarnation of Vaman. According to the calculation of time, Lord Vishnu arrived in the incarnation of Vaman on the Dwadashi date of Shukla Paksha of the month of Bhadrapada.

King Bali performed Ashwamedha Yagya

After some time, following the advice of Guru Shukracharya, King Bali organized the Ashwamedha Yagya. Had he succeeded in the yajña, King Bali would have become the conqueror of the three worlds. For the success of this Ashwamedha Yagya, King Bali sent invitations to the three worlds. After receiving the invitation, Lord Vishnu also arrived in the incarnation of Vaman and King Bali honored the Vaman Brahmin. When Vaman Devta began to return, King Bali expressed his desire to make a donation to him.

Vaman Dev refused to accept the donation. After this, King Bali again talked about donating. Then Vaman Dev asked for three steps of land. Hearing this, King Bali said that this is nothing. Then Lord Vishnu measured the earth in one step, the sky in the second step and when there was no land left for the third step, King Bali himself placed his brain under the feet of Lord Vishnu.

As soon as Lord Vishnu stepped on it, King Bali went to the underworld. Seeing this, King Bali recognized Lord Vishnu. Then Lord Vishnu was pleased with King Bali’s devotion and asked him to ask for a blessing. King Bali asked Lord Vishnu to allow him to live with him in the underworld. Then Lord Vishnu accepted the blessing of King Bali and Indradev obtained the throne of heaven. On the other hand, when Lord Vishnu did not return to Vaikuntha, Mother Lakshmi began to worry.

When Mother Lakshmi came to know about Lord Vishnu’s stay in the underworld, she came to the underworld with the Raksha Sutra. There, King Bali became his brother by tying the Raksha Sutra and, pleased with this, King Bali asked Goddess Lakshmi for a groom. Then Mother Lakshmi asked for a boon to free Lord Vishnu from the underworld, which King Bali accepted, but before Lord Vishnu returned to Vaikuntha, King Bali asked for another boon from Sri Hari.

King Bali asked for a blessing for the goddess Lakshmi

In this blessing, King Bali asked Shri Hari to stay in the underworld from the full moon of the month of Shravan until Dhanteras. Lord Vishnu accepted the request of King Bali. After this, when Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi returned to Vaikuntha, the festival of lights, Diwali, was celebrated. It is said that Raja Bali had also sought the blessing of worshiping Goddess Lakshmi from Dhanteras to Diwali. Only after this, Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped from Dhanteras to Diwali.
