Bangladesh’s interim government has initiated efforts to hold general elections soon. Mohammad Yunus’ government has constituted a search committee to form a new Electoral Commission. This six-member committee will be headed by Justice Zubair Rehman Chaudhary of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.

The caretaker government headed by Mohammad Yunus has constituted a six-member search committee for the new Election Commission, which has included many prominent personalities, including Supreme Court and High Court judges. Meanwhile, many political parties, including the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), had demanded to prepare a roadmap for the 13th general elections. After which, the Mohammad Yunus government first decided to constitute a new electoral commission, for which the Yunus government created a search committee.

The interim government will hold fair elections: Minister of Justice

Law Minister Asif Nazrul has said: “The caretaker government has initiated efforts to hold the next general elections and a search committee has been formed to form a new Election Commission.” He said that the elections held earlier were fake, so there is a lot to talk about the voter list. The Minister of Justice says the new Electoral Commission will update the voter list and this will be done through a transparent process. He said the interim government will hold fair and free elections.

What did the Minister of Justice say on the date of the elections?

However, when asked when the elections will be held, he said it depends on many factors. According to the law, once the search committee is formed, it suggests the names of 10 people to the President within a maximum period of 15 days, for each position in the Electoral Commission the names of 2 people are suggested. The President selects the Chief Election Commissioner and four other EC officials from those recommended by the search committee.

EC officials resigned on September 5

Barely a month after the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s government in Bangladesh, all five Election Commission officials, including former chief election commissioner Qazi Habibul Awal, had resigned. All important posts in the Election Commission will become vacant from September 5. According to the Chief Election Commissioner Appointment Act and the Election Commission Act, 2022, the president is required to constitute a six-member committee under the chairmanship of the appellate division judge. The name of the appellate judge is appointed by the Chief Justice of Bangladesh.
