The Punjab and Haryana High Court has strongly reprimanded the Punjab Police in the matter of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s interview from jail. The High Court said the jail became a studio for the gangster. He gave him facilities as a state guest. The cancellation report submitted by the SIT raises doubts about the nexus between the police and gangsters. The court has also ordered a fresh investigation into the interview given by Lawrence to a private channel during his stay in Bathinda jail in 2023.

‘Crime was glorified’

A bench of the High Court has ordered that a new SIT be formed to investigate this case. The case has been asked to be investigated under the terms of criminal conspiracy, abetment, Prevention of Corruption Act and Information Technology Act.

During the hearing, the court said: “The police allowed the criminal to use electronic equipment and provided him with studio-like facilities for interviews, which glorified the crime.” This is likely to encourage the criminal and his associates to commit other crimes, including extortion.

Bhagwant Mann harshly criticized the government

The top court also pulled up the state government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over its handling of the case and said lower-level officials were being made scapegoats. A bench headed by Justices Anupinder Singh Grewal and Lupita Banerjee said that among the suspended officers, only two were registered officers, while the rest were junior employees.

Apart from this, the court also raised questions over the senior officer’s failure to file an affidavit regarding Lawrence Bishnoi’s interview in Punjab jail. The court asked, “Why did the DGP say that no interview was conducted in Punjab Jail and why Section 120-B of the Criminal Conspiracy Act was not imposed on the officers involved?” The court has ordered that the matter be investigated.
