The Khunti seat remains very important in the 2024 Jharkhand Assembly elections. This seat has been held by the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) since 2005. Neelkanth Singh Munda of the BJP won this seat by defeating Sushila Kerketta of the Congress. Since then, he has been an MLA here for 25 years. The challenge before the Congress and the JMM alliance is to wrest this seat from the BJP.
With the announcement of assembly elections in Jharkhand, all parties including BJP and JMM have started implementing their respective strategies. While the BJP is making all-out efforts to return to power, the challenge for the JMM-Congress alliance is to save the government.
History of Khunti
The city, with a population of 124,388 as of the 2011 Census of India, is also the district headquarters. This constituency is reserved for the scheduled tribes. Khunti district was separated from Ranchi district. Voting will take place here on November 13.
Registration process begins
The nomination process for the Khunti seat has begun. The nomination process will continue until October 25. Applications will be accepted from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nominations will be reviewed on October 28 and can be withdrawn until October 30. The security money for general candidates is fixed at Rs 10,000, while SC/ST candidates will have to deposit Rs 5,000. Each candidate can spend a maximum of Rs 40 lakh.
Khunti’s electoral history
This seat has been very special since the country gained independence. Earlier, this headquarters was part of Bihar and later became part of Jharkhand. The Jharkhand Party won the first four elections here. Congress won here for the first time in 1967. After this, till 2000, Congress won from Khunti seven times. In 2000, Neelkanth Singh Munda of the BJP defeated Sushila Kerketta of the Congress, making the BJP win this seat for the first time. Since then he remains the MLA here.
