Lok Adalat – Alternative Dispute Resolution Mechanism
Narnaul. District Legal Services Authority Secretary and Chief Judicial Magistrate Shailja Gupta said that as per Section 19 of the Legal Services Authority Act, 1987, Lok Adalat is constituted to resolve cases pending before the court and pending cases. He informed that the Lok Adalat held at the district level deals with matrimonial and family disputes, mixed criminal matters, land acquisition issues, labor disputes, labor compensation disputes, bank recovery issues (nationalized, multinational and private banks), pensions matters, Housing Board and Municipality matters, including slum clearance and housing finance matters, consumer complaint matters, electricity matters, telephone bill disputes, housing taxes, etc.
Workers’ compensation dispute cases are resolved. Apart from this, other civil matters like partition, possession matters, matters related to rent, easements, contracts, etc., those matters which have not reached the court can also be resolved through Lok Adalat. He said even if the age of the parents is less than 60 years, they can claim maintenance under this law. Seniors can file this claim against their children, grandchildren, and relatives. Relative means the legal heir of the childless elderly person who is not a minor.
