The Telangana government on Wednesday banned mayonnaise made from raw eggs for a year over food safety concerns. The state government took this decision after a woman died and 15 others fell ill after eating momos in Hyderabad.

According to food safety officials, many such cases have been reported in the state in recent times where eating mayonnaise made from raw eggs has caused problems. It is widely used in sandwiches, momos, shawarma and Al Faham chicken etc.

Food poisoning problem due to mayonnaise consumption!

The Telangana Food Safety Commissioner said in a statement: “Observations and complaints received in the last few months have revealed that consumption of mayonnaise made from raw eggs is causing food poisoning.” This ban went into effect on Wednesday.

Alerting authorities and food safety, the commissioner said: “In cases where food appears to be harmful to people’s health,” he said, “a ban will be imposed on the production, storage and sale of mayonnaise made with raw eggs starting October 30. “There will be a ban for one year starting in 2024.”

The government order also says that whenever there is a justified reason, the public will be alerted about possible health risks associated with food products.

Woman dies after eating momos

On Tuesday, a 31-year-old woman died after eating momos in Hyderabad and 15 other people fell ill. Initial investigation revealed that these sellers had ordered momos from the same supplier. A few days earlier, cases of food poisoning had been reported in Shawarma establishments, leading to health officials raiding Shawarma and Mandi establishments across the city.
