The largest floating solar project in central and northern India, generating 90 MW of power, has come into operation in Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh. State Renewable Energy Minister Rakesh Shukla said in a statement that the Omkareshwar ‘Floating Solar Project’, which cost Rs 646 crore, was launched on August 8.

The Renewable Energy Minister said that this project has been developed under the Union Ministry of Renewable Energy and is the largest solar park in India and the largest floating solar power project in central and northern India. This floating power plant has been developed in the backwaters of the Omkareshwar dam.

It is estimated that as much electricity will be generated

He said this project is expected to generate 19.65 million units of electricity in the first year and 462.93 million units of electricity in the next 25 years. Minister Shukla said that once commissioned, the project will reduce carbon emissions by 2.3 lakh tonnes and contribute significantly to the Central Government’s mission of reducing carbon emissions to zero by 2070.

There will also be a reduction in water evaporation.

According to Shukla, the project will also help conserve water by reducing its evaporation. He said the project was developed through competitive tariff tenders on a ‘build, acquire and operate’ (BOO) basis for 25 years at the rate of Rs 3.26 per unit.

The minister said the project has been developed under the Union Ministry of Renewable Energy, and is being implemented by SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL), a wholly owned subsidiary of SJVN. He said that with the commissioning of this project, the total installed capacity of SJVN has increased to 2466.50 MW.
