Numbers 9 and 12 are “unfortunate” for the BJP in Jharkhand, will number 4 be useful?

Can BJP repeat its 2014 performance in Jharkhand in 2024?

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is trying to end the five-year wait in Jharkhand in the 2024 elections, but to do so it will have to overcome the challenge of the Indian Alliance. Furthermore, it must also be noted that the party is staying away from its “unlucky” figure of 12 in Jharkhand. The saffron party would like to move away from the figure of 12 and approach the figure of 14. In Jharkhand, the figure of 14 pleased them and for the first time a government (CM Raghuvar Das) had completed 5 years in the state.

Jharkhand was created as a new state by separating it from Bihar in November 2000. Then the Bihar Assembly elections were held here. In the year 2005, assembly elections were held for the first time in Jharkhand, which appeared on the map of the country as a new state. Of the 4 elections held here so far, the year 2014 was a great election for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) because it got good results here for the first time.

12 seats reduced compared to 2005

In the 2014 elections in the 81-seat Jharkhand Assembly, the BJP fielded its candidates for 72 seats, in which it won 37 seats. However, the security deposit for one seat was also confiscated. Furthermore, the party’s vote share (31.8 percent) also increased significantly. But numbers 9 and 12 proved to have ‘bad luck’ with the match. If we look at the results of the last 4 elections held in the state, this happened not once but twice.

Assembly elections were first held in Jharkhand in 2005. The party then fielded its candidates for 63 seats, of which it won 30 seats. But in 2009 he had to face a crushing defeat. Compared to 2005, in the 2009 elections its 12 seats were reduced and it had to lose power. It then tried its luck with 67 seats, but had to settle for only 18 seats.

12 seats also reduced in the 2019 elections

After the 2009 defeat, the BJP achieved its biggest victory in the 2014 assembly elections. Its candidates won 37 seats out of 72. For the first time, the BJP also managed to form a majority government. In the elections, 6 of the 8 MLAs from Babulal Marandi’s party, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik), joined the BJP in early 2015. Later, the Assembly Speaker also gave his approval to this merger, which further strengthened the Raghuvar Das government’s position in the state. Raghuvar led his government for a full five years and also became the first Chief Minister to do so in Jharkhand.

But in the 2019 elections, the numbers of 9 and 12 again turned out to be unfavorable for the BJP. The BJP worked hard in these elections, but had to face defeat. Furthermore, compared to 2014, its number of seats decreased again by 12. Also in early 2009, BJP’s seats had reduced by 12 seats, now in 2019 its seats have also reduced by the same number.

Seats decreased in 2019, but vote percentage increased

In the year 2019, for the first time, the BJP fielded its candidates in 79 seats, but with the loss of 12 seats it was reduced to just 25. However, it was a relief for the BJP that its vote share increased and for the first time once obtained more than 33 percent of the votes.

It now remains to be seen whether the BJP is able to repeat the historic performance of 2014 in the 2024 elections or achieve results with a combination of the ‘unlucky 12’ of 2009 and 2019.
