Supreme Leader of Iran and Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia
Every effort is being made to improve relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Despite this, both countries cannot unite with open hearts. In his latest statement, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia has explained the real reason for the tension in relations between both countries.
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan said on Thursday that relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran are moving in the right direction but have become complicated due to regional dynamics. He said we are having very clear and honest conversations with the Iranians about this.
Aren’t relations improving thanks to Yemen?
During the annual investment conference in Riyadh, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal said that the difference in our relations with Iran was that, from our perspective, Iran’s regional behavior (especially in relation to Yemen) does not led to stability and that there is a reason why We are having very clear and honest conversations with the Iranians. China facilitated reconciliation between Saudi Arabia and Iran
In fact, the dispute between Saudi Arabia and Iran increased when in 2015 Saudi Arabia sentenced a Shiite religious leader to death. In protest, protesters entered the Saudi embassy in Tehran, after which Saudi Arabia ended its diplomatic relations with Iran. But last year, with the mediation of China, officials from both countries announced the reestablishment of diplomatic relations. This agreement reached in Beijing is considered very important because the United States was also trying to normalize relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel.
What is the dispute regarding Yemen?
Both Saudi Arabia and Iran are divided into different factions due to the power struggle and civil war raging in Yemen since 2011. While Iran supports Yemen’s Houthi rebels, Saudi Arabia is against them. In Yemen there is an international coalition led by Saudi Arabia fighting the Houthi rebels.
The Houthis represent Yemen’s minority Shiite Zaidi community, which is why Shiite-dominated Iran is their strong supporter. This is the reason why relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia have been tense. Saudi Arabia has often accused Iran of providing weapons to the Houthis, although Iran has always denied these accusations.
