New numbers of tuberculosis patients surprised even the WHO

Shocking figures have emerged about tuberculosis. Last year i.e. in 2023, 80 lakh people were infected with this disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) gave this information. Even the WHO was shocked to see these figures. He has said this is the highest number to date.

What was said in the report?

The report says that last year around 1.25 million people died of tuberculosis. These deaths are almost double the number of people who will die from HIV in 2023. The WHO said tuberculosis most affects people in Southeast Asia, Africa and the Western Pacific region. More than half of the world’s cases are in India, Indonesia, China, the Philippines and Pakistan.

The fact is that tuberculosis still kills and sickens many people, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement. We have the tools to prevent, detect and treat it. However, deaths from tuberculosis continue to decline globally and the number of newly infected people has begun to stabilize.

What is tuberculosis?

Tuberculosis is a type of infectious disease that occurs in the lungs. This disease is caused by a bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is transmitted from one person to another through small particles from coughs and sneezes that spread into the air. Its symptoms are difficult to recognize at first. Many medications and antibiotics are available in the market for its treatment.

In this disease, the patient may have a cough for more than 3 months. Apart from this, other problems like fever, chills, and body pain may also occur.
