The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, is currently on a three-day visit to India. During this time, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez used UPI in Mumbai and bought the idol of Lord Ganesha. The move marks Sanchez as the latest high-profile foreign leader to adopt India’s leading digital payments technology, reflecting UPI’s growing influence on the global stage.

Earlier in January this year, French President Emmanuel Macron also started the trend by making UPI payments during his Republic Day visit to India. A week after Macron’s visit, the UPI was formally inaugurated at the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris. Spanish Prime Minister Sánchez carried out the transaction with the assistance of an Indian representative, emphasizing the convenience and efficiency of the UPI system.
Sánchez’s visit coincided with the Diwali celebrations, where he and his wife Begoña Gómez enthusiastically participated in the traditional festivities. They also enjoyed popular Indian sweets, including laddus, adding a cultural dimension to their visit, which was warmly appreciated by local people and officials. .
