The deal related to the merger of Reliance’s media unit and Walt Disney’s Indian business has received regulatory approval. This has cleared the way for the formation of the largest media company in the country. At that moment, the JioHotstar domain suddenly came into discussion. To a question by PTI about the identification given in the viral media post, the unnamed technical expert said, “I have not received any response or proposal from Reliance.” He said: “I don’t think they intend to pay in my case. I would be very happy if they did.”

However, many legal experts believe that the technician has a “winnable case” and there is a good chance that he will obtain a huge compensation. However, this anonymous technologist does not want to get involved in a legal battle. “This domain can now be bought by anyone. I hope Reliance takes a generous approach and buys it at least a tenth of the original price,” he said. This technical expert, who goes by the name ‘Dreamer’, had posted a long message on the domain’s page addressed to the officials of Reliance Industries. In it, the Mukesh Ambani-led group was asked to pay for their higher education at Cambridge in exchange for the JioHotstar.com domain.

A project by this technologist was selected for the University of Cambridge Accelerated Program in 2021. This was a transformative experience for him. He couldn’t get admission in Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and always wanted to learn from the best institute. He said that in early 2023, he learned from social media that OTT platform Disney Plus Hotstar was losing its active users after losing IPL rights and that Disney was considering selling or merging Hotstar with an Indian competitor. The technologist said that in such a situation, he came up with the idea of creating a new domain by combining the names of Jio and Hotstar.
