TRAI has granted an extension to implement the new traceability rules, bringing huge relief to millions of mobile users in the country. The telecommunications regulator has decided to grant a one-month extension to telecommunications entities and operators for this. However, the telecom regulator has also set a condition for this. The message traceability rule would be implemented from November 1, after which users might face problems in obtaining OTP i.e. one-time password on mobile. However, nowadays users will not have any problem getting OTP.
I got a 1 month extension
The telecom regulator has given an ultimatum to implement the message traceability rule from December 1, 2024. TRAI and the Telecom Department take fake calls and messages seriously. To address this, the government has implemented a new rule from October 1, 2024, where messages and calls will not be received from users who are not on the whitelist. Additionally, messages with non-whitelisted URLs will also be blocked at the network level.
TRAI has said in its guidelines that directions were issued on August 13, 2024 to impose strict regulation regarding promotional voice calls. It has been said that strict action will be taken against violation of the rules, including blacklisting of telecom resources and blocking numbers. Following TRAI’s directive, so far more than 800 entities or individuals have been blacklisted for violation of rules and more than 18 lakh mobile numbers have been blocked.
The telecom regulator also issued instructions on August 20, 2024 regarding whitelisting of APK, URL and OTT links. The rules related to this were implemented from October 1, 2024. Additionally, from October 1, telemarketing calls coming from the number 140 were migrated to the blockchain platform based on Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT).

The guidelines related to message traceability were to be implemented from November 1, 2024, for which TRAI has granted an extension of one month i.e. 30 days. Now this rule will be implemented from December 1, 2024. On the request of telecom companies and industry body COAI, the telecom regulator decided to grant this extension, so that users do not face any problem in getting OTP. The instructions related to this were issued on August 28, 2024. After giving an extension of 30 days, TRAI has also made it a condition that after November 30, 2024, telecom operators issue daily notices to the entities to complete the compliance with message traceability.
