Meanwhile, Dr Ujjwal Banerjee, a senior member of the movement, recently condemned the transfer of two protesting doctors from Jalpaiguri to Murshidabad. Banerjee said, “We demand an apology from the health department and withdrawal of this order. We will not be deterred by such actions.”

Abhay Manch has decided to keep pressure on the authorities until significant action is taken in this regard. A day after the incident, Kolkata police arrested civic volunteer Sanjay Roy. Roy has been charged under Articles 103(1) (punishment for murder), Article 64 (punishment for rape) and Article 66 (punishment for causing death or rendering a person in a persistent vegetative state) of the Code of Justice of India (BNS). Charges have been filed and proceedings are underway against them.

Last month, the CBI identified Roy as the “sole main accused” in its initial chargesheet, citing a possible “broader conspiracy” behind the crime.
