Nairobi: At least 15 people have died and 113 others are missing after landslides hit six villages in eastern Uganda. The police have given this information. According to police, 15 injured people were rescued and admitted to hospital. The Uganda Red Cross said on Thursday that 13 bodies had been recovered after landslides destroyed 40 houses. Rescue efforts continue.

Death toll may rise

Local media reported that authorities feared the death toll could rise to 30. A landslide occurred in the mountainous Bulambuli district after heavy rain on Wednesday night. The district is about 280 kilometers east of the capital Kampala. The situation seems very scary.

A journalist in the area told The Associated Press that local officials have said heavy machinery will be brought in to help with rescue efforts, but the roads are muddy and it is still raining. The ‘Daily Monitor’ newspaper reported that most of the bodies recovered so far are children. Meanwhile, two boats capsized during a rescue operation on the Nile River after the Pakwach Bridge was submerged on Wednesday. (AP)
