In Uttar Pradesh’s Banda district, water released after canal cleaning wreaked havoc on farmers’ fields. The ripe paddy crop of dozens of farmers of Shiv village of Baberu tehsil drowned in water and rotted. Farmers say that crops of more than 500 bighas have been completely destroyed. The situation has become flood-like as more than three feet of water filled the fields.
On Tuesday, a group of distressed farmers reached the DM’s office and demanded compensation. Farmers say that due to poor harvests a famine situation has arisen. Some farmers said: we no longer have money left to marry our daughters and feed our families. Since there was no hearing at the tehsil level, the farmers also sought help from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
