Accident in Kerala, (Present Society), Thiruvananthapuram: A truck crushed people sleeping on the roadside in Thrissur district of Kerala. The accident took place around 4.30 am today on the national highway at Nattika near Valpad police station, killing five people and injuring six others. Police said the accident victims were nomads and lived in tents along the road.

Among the dead were two children, ages one and a half and four years old.
A senior police officer said the dead included two children, aged one and a half and four years. Two women have also died. The truck was transporting timber from Kannur and the cleaner was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident. The cleaner did not have a license. According to the police, both were drunk. He has been arrested. Thrissur city police commissioner R Ilango said a case of culpable homicide has been registered under the non-bailable provision of the Indian Justice Code (BNS). He said that for this crime there is a penalty of 10 years in prison. He also visited the accident site.

The condition of the 2 injured is serious
According to another official, witnesses said that the vehicle was traveling at high speed and that the driver and the cleaner tried to flee after the accident. The locals captured him and handed him over to the police, he said. District Collector Arjun Pandian, after visiting the spot, said all the injured were being treated at Thrissur Medical College. The condition of two of the injured is critical. He also said that a detailed report has been requested from the police.
Big mistake by the driver and the cleaner: Minister of Finance
Kerala Revenue Minister K Rajan said a detailed report has been sought from the police and the collector. Rajan termed the incident unfortunate and said that as per the initial investigation by the police, there was a serious mistake on the part of the driver and the cleaner. He also said that the circumstances that forced the victims to sleep on the side of the road will be investigated.
