Akhilesh on BJP: A major change has been made in the DGP appointment process in Uttar Pradesh. Till now, the DGP name panel was sent to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), but now this system has changed. As per the new rules, the responsibility of selecting the DGP will now lie with the state government.
What’s the whole deal?
Recently, the Cabinet approved the UP Police Force Chief selection rules and regulations 2024. Under this, a special committee will be formed for the selection of the DGP, which will be headed by a retired High Court judge. Once selected, the DGP’s tenure will be 2 years, but the candidate must have at least 6 months of service remaining at the time of selection.
Along with this, it is also mentioned in the rules that if the DGP is involved in any criminal case, is involved in corruption or is negligent in his duties, then the state government can remove him even before he completes his 2-year term. . Along with this, it has also been said that the guidelines of the Supreme Court regarding the dismissal of the DGP will be followed.
Akhilesh Yadav pointed out
Amid this change, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav attacked the Yogi government without mentioning its name. He said on social media: “I have heard that a system is being created to give a permanent position to a senior officer and extend his tenure by 2 years… The question is whether those who create this system will stay for 2 years or not. Is this not an attempt to wrest control of Lucknow from Delhi? Delhi vs. Lucknow 2.0.” Intense debates are taking place on this issue in political circles.
