Ambalá: A political conflict has broken out between Punjab and Haryana regarding Chandigarh. Even BJP leaders from Haryana and Punjab are at loggerheads on the Chandigarh issue. While BJP leader Sunil Jakhar and Punjab Minister Harpal Singh Cheema have said that Punjab has right over Chandigarh, Haryana Minister and senior BJP leader Anil Vij said Haryana also has right about Chandigarh.
Anil Vij called for Hindi speaking area and SYL water from Punjab
On Punjab claiming Chandigarh, cabinet minister Anil Vij said that he has a misunderstanding, he does not know the history of Punjab and Haryana. Chandigarh can belong to Punjab only when the Hindi speaking areas are merged with Haryana. Until then we will have SYL water; otherwise, Chandigarh is as much theirs as it is ours.
Vij said: first implement the partition agreement
Earlier, the Chandigarh issue also resonated in the Haryana Assembly. Coming out of the House, Anil Vij said that until Punjab returns the Hindi belt to Haryana, Haryana’s rights over Chandigarh will remain. Vij said the Punjab government should implement the agreement reached on the partition of Punjab-Haryana. He alleged that Punjab leaders are making such statements for political reasons.
Why are both states facing each other?
Let us tell you that the decision to set up a new Haryana assembly complex in Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, has created a political controversy in the region. Political parties in Punjab have condemned the move, saying it is an insult to the demands and sentiments of Punjab. Last year, the Union Territory offered 10 acres of land to Haryana to set up its assembly. This gained momentum when the Union Environment Ministry reportedly gave environmental clearance to 12 acres of land given to the Chandigarh administration by the Haryana government in exchange for 10 acres of land for the campus.
Actually, this issue is controversial because Punjab has always claimed Chandigarh. After the movement, Punjab was partitioned in 1966. Parliament passed a law in 1966 under which Haryana came into existence and Chandigarh became joint capital and provisional union territory.
