Following the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s government, fundamentalism is becoming dominant in Bangladesh. The head of the interim government of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, takes one after another decisions that go against the basic spirit of Bangladesh at the time of its creation. At the same time, there is now a possibility of Bangladesh also declaring itself an Islamic country. Bangladesh’s top judicial official has proposed that the words secular and socialist be removed from the country’s constitution.
They demand to eliminate these things from the Constitution
Bangladesh Attorney General Mohammad Aszamman made several arguments before the court during the hearing on a writ petition. The Attorney General has sought to remove two of the four principles of the Constitution of Bangladesh, namely secularism and socialism. Along with this, the abolition of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s Father of the Nation status has also been demanded. In addition, it was demanded that the death penalty be provided for changing the government by extraconstitutional means.
Challenge to the validity of the constitutional amendment
The petition filed before the Bangladesh court questions the validity of the 15th amendment of the Constitution made by the then Sheikh Hasina government in 2011. This amendment included decisions to restore secularism, abolish the caretaker government system to oversee the elections, assuming power by extra-constitutional means and granting Sheikh Mujibur Rahman the status of Father of the Nation. It has been argued in court that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the leader of Bangladesh. However, the Awami League Party has politicized it in its own interest.
Court seeks response from interim government
A two-judge bench of the Bangladesh High Court issued a ruling and asked the Mohammad Yunus government to explain its position on the matter. Let us tell you that on August 5, Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government was overthrown in Bangladesh amid student protests and large-scale violence. (input language)
