Guwahati: The Assam government on Tuesday decided to rename Karimganj district located in the Barak Valley to Shribhoomi, Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma said. CM said this decision was taken in the state cabinet meeting. “More than 100 years ago, Kaviguru Rabindranath Tagore described the modern Karimganj district as Shribhoomi, the land of goddess Lakshmi, and today the Assam Cabinet has fulfilled the long-standing demand of our people,” he said.
CM Himanta announced on
The announcement of the name change of Karimganj has been made by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma himself. He said the initiative to rename the district will reflect the hopes and aspirations of the people here. CM said that we are gradually changing the names of those places which have no historical mention or meaning in the dictionary. ‘Kalapahad’ does not appear in Assamese or Bengali dictionaries, nor is ‘Karimganj’ usually based on linguistic meaning and many of those names have already been modified, including several villages like Bhasoni Chowk in Barpeta Are.
‘You can also change the names of many more places’
He said changing the name of Karimganj would preserve the cultural context as the new name has meaning in both Assamese and Bengali dictionary. He said more place names could be changed to reflect the history and linguistic roots of Assam.
