Today, Saturday is the election results day in the Jharkhand assembly elections. All major parties have their eyes on the election results. Hazaribagh district, one of the most famous cities in the state, also showed a lot of enthusiasm for the elections. In the district, 62.78 percent of voting was carried out. There is a tough contest between Janaki Yadav of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Amit Kumar Yadav of BJP in the Barkatha assembly seat of the district. Initial trends will start to emerge here in some time.
The elections were held in two phases in Jharkhand. In the first phase, voting for 43 seats was held on November 13, while voting for the other 38 seats was held on November 20. Independent candidate Amit Kumar Yadav had won the Barkatha assembly seat under Hazaribagh.
Competition between the NDA and the Indian alliance
There was a tough contest between the NDA and the Indian alliance in Jharkhand, surrounded by 5 states. BJP, JDU, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas Paswan) and Jharkhand Students Union contested the elections on behalf of the NDA. Thus, three parties belonging to the Congress, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Communist Party of India entered the fray in the Indian alliance. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha is the most prominent party in the Indian alliance. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Hemant Soren became Chief Minister after winning the 2019 elections.
At the beginning of the 2019 elections, independent candidate Amit Kumar Yadav surprised everyone by winning the elections. After failing to get the BJP ticket, Amit Yadav had announced that he would contest as an independent. He belongs to an influential political family. His father, Chittaranjan Yadav, was elected MLA from this seat in 2005.
The then independent candidate Amit Yadav had defeated BJP’s Janaki Prasad Yadav by a margin of 24,812 votes in a triangular contest. Amit got 72,572 votes, while Janaki Prasad got 47,760 votes. Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (P) candidate Bateshwar Prasad Mehta came third with 33,526 votes. In the elections, a total of 3,30,610 voters participated for this seat. In the election, 69.7% of votes were cast for the Barkatha seat.
electoral history
Jharkhand used to be part of undivided Bihar before 2000. But in November 2000, it was separated from Bihar and became a new state. Then Bateshwar Prasad Mehta of the Communist Party of India was elected MLA. But in the year 2005, Amit’s father Chittaranjan Yadav won the elections from the Barkatha seat on the BJP ticket. Then in the 2009 elections, Amit Kumar contested on the BJP ticket and became an MLA.
However, amid the Modi wave across the country, the BJP managed to capture power in the assembly elections held in Jharkhand in 2014. But it lost in the Barkatta seat. Jharkhand Vikas Morcha’s Janaki Prasad Yadav had defeated BJP candidate and MLA Amit Kumar Yadav. Due to this defeat, the BJP did not give Amit entry again in the 2019 elections, after which he ran as an independent. But this time the victory went to Amit and the BJP had to face a disappointing defeat.
