A massive clash took place between farmers and police at Bathinda village in Doonewala on Friday. This dispute revolved around the huge difference in compensation for land acquired under the Bharatmala Project. The farmers protested under the leadership of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugraha).
Since morning, farmers from different parts of Punjab started gathering at Bathinda village, Mysar Khana. The farmers who came from Sangrur broke the police blockades and entered Doonewala village. Here the police fired tear gas shells to stop the farmers. The clash continued for about 30-35 minutes, in which many people from both sides were injured.
Clash between farmers and police
It is said that after the lathi charge by the police, the farmers also pelted stones at the police. Many police officers and farmers were injured in this clash. On Thursday, the district administration acquired land for the project in Shergarh, Bhagwangarh and Dunnewala villages. Farmers also protested against this, but Farmer Union Ugrahan announced that on Friday, farmers from across Punjab will come together and return the land taken by the administration to the farmers.
Under the leadership of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugraha) president Joginder Singh Ugraha, the convoy of farmers was moving to reclaim the land acquired under the Bharatmala Project. Farmers say there is a difference of Rs 25-30 lakh in land compensation. In some places more compensation is given and in others less, so farmers are angry.
Jhanda Singh Jethuke threatened to intensify the movement
Farmer leader Jhanda Singh Jethuke condemned the police action and said tear gas shells were fired at peacefully protesting farmers. This caused a stampede among farmers and many people were injured. The police have increased security to control the situation. Farmer leaders have warned that if the wage gap is not resolved, the agitation will intensify.
