According to a mythological belief about Bhai Dooj, Yamuna had fasted that day during the long life of her brother Yamraj and had given him Annakoot food. According to the story, Lord Yama appeared to his sister that day. Yama’s sister Yamuna was very eager to meet her brother. Yamuna was very happy to see her brother. Yamuna was happy and gave a grand welcome to her brother.
Yama was happy and gave him a blessing that if brother and sister bathed together in the river Yamuna on that day, they would obtain salvation. For this reason, bathing with brothers and sisters in the Yamuna River is of great importance. Apart from this, Yama and Yamuna accepted their brother’s promise that on this day each brother should go to his sister’s house. Since then the tradition of celebrating Bhai Dooj continues.
Unique story of Shri Krishna and Subhadra.
According to another mythological story related to this festival of Bhai Dooj, Lord Shri Krishna returned to Dwarka on the day of Bhai Dooj after killing Narakasura. In such a situation, his sister Subhadra welcomed her brother with fruits, flowers, sweets and lighted lamps. Apart from this, Subhadra had also applied Tilak to Lord Shri Krishna and wished his long life.

On the day of Bhai Dooj, sisters wish their brother a long life by applying tilak to him and giving him gifts. In return, the brother promises to protect his sister. On this day, it is especially auspicious for a brother to dine at his sister’s house. In the city of Mithila, this festival is still known as Yamdwitiya. On this day, rice is ground and a paste is applied to both the brothers’ hands. Furthermore, in some places there is a tradition of applying vermilion on the hands of brothers.
