London: The ‘South Terminal’ at Britain’s Gatwick Airport was evacuated and closed for ‘security reasons’ on Friday morning following the recovery of a suspicious object and a bomb disposal team was deployed as a ‘precaution’. Gatwick is the second busiest airport in the United Kingdom after Heathrow Airport. Gatwick Airport is located approximately 45 kilometers south of London.
What did the police say?
According to the police, the incident caused major problems in the ‘South Terminal’ of the busy airport. However, Gatwick Airport’s ‘Northern Terminal’ was not affected. “Police were called to Gatwick Airport at 8.20am on Friday after a suspected contraband item was found in the ‘South Terminal’,” Sussex Police said in a statement. According to the police, “a security cordon was created to ensure the safety of people, staff and other officials present at the airport. “As a precautionary measure, a bomb disposal team is being deployed to the airport.”
