Student organizations warned of intensifying the movement
Chandigarh News (Aaj Samaj), Chandigarh: The demand to hold Senate elections in Panjab University is increasing. On one hand, student organizations are continuously protesting demanding elections, while on the other, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann has also made serious allegations against the central government. The CM has written a letter to the vice president demanding that Senate elections be held at the earliest. On the other hand, other political parties in the state also cornered the central government on this issue and demanded the holding of Senate elections.
The matter worsened after the police lathi-charged the students.
The movement of student organizations to hold Senate elections has been going on for 25 days. Last day the movement intensified when Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was prevented from meeting him during his visit. In fact, the students had planned to make the Chief Minister aware of their demands and the need for Senate elections in the university, but when they tried to move forward with this effort, the security forces charged them with lathi charges.
Many students were injured in this lathi charge by the police. The students have also alleged that the university administration and the government are deliberately delaying the elections so that they can be arbitrary and ignore the voice of the students. For the past 24 days, students have been on strike on the Panjab University campus, but so far there has been no concrete response to their demands.
Issuing a statement on the students’ protest and the lathi charge incident, the university administration said that they are sensitive to the demands of the students and efforts will be made to resolve their concerns soon. However, the administration also said that the students were not allowed to meet the Chief Minister due to their safety.
