Lucknow: A big news related to the appointment of DGP in UP has come to light. There has been a change in the appointment process of the DGP. Until now a panel of names was sent to the Union Public Service Commission, but now this system has changed. Now only UP will decide who will become DGP.
What’s the whole deal?
The Cabinet has approved the Selection of the UP Police Chief and Regulation 2024 for the selection of the DGP in UP. Now the DGP will be selected by a committee headed by a retired High Court judge. Once selected, the DGP will last 2 years. This will require that you have 6 months of service remaining at the time of selection.
However, the rules also state that in case of any criminal or corruption case or failure to discharge his duties, the state government can remove the DGP from office even before he completes his two-year term. He also said that the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court have been followed in the provisions relating to the removal of the Director General of Police from his position.
Akhilesh Yadav pointed out
On one hand, there was news of changes in the DGP appointment process, while on the other, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav attacked the Yogi government on social media without mentioning its name. Akhilesh said, ‘I have heard that a system is being created to give permanent posting to a senior officer and extend his tenure by 2 years… The question is whether those who created the system will stay for 2 years or not. Is this an attempt to take the reins away from Delhi? Delhi vs Lucknow 2.0. There is much discussion in political circles about this change in the appointment process.
