Chhath Puja Fast Story: Chhath, the great festival of faith, is an important festival celebrated especially in Delhi, Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh. The four-day festival is dedicated to the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya. Chhath Puja is considered to be of great importance from religious and cultural point of view. Chhath Puja begins with Nahay-Khay on the Chaturthi date of Shukla Paksha month of Kartik month. This festival lasts 4 days. The Kharna tradition begins on the second day of Chhath Puja. Chhath Puja is performed by offering Arghya to the setting sun on the third day of Chhath i.e. the sixth day of Shukla Paksha of the Kartik month.
The Chhath festival ends with the offering of Arghya to the rising sun on Saptami Tithi, the fourth day of Chhath Puja. Today i.e. 7th November is the third day of Chhath Puja and on this day in the afternoon Arghya is offered to the Sun God. According to beliefs, Arghya is offered to the setting sun on the third day of Chhath but after Offering Arghya, fasting women also recite the Vrat Katha at night. It is said that after offering Sandhya Arghya, it is very important for fasting women to recite this Vrat Katha.

While sunset will occur at 5:48 pm On this day, devotees immerse themselves in waist-deep water and offer Arghya to the setting sun. A mythological story related to Chhath Puja is related to King Priyavrat. According to this story, in some kingdom there was a king named Priyavrat. Raja and his wife Malini were always worried because they did not have children. She tried many measures to have a child, but there was no result and she was left childless. Once King Priyavrat and his wife came to Maharishi Kashyap to wish for a son and said: O Maharishi! We don’t have children. Tell us about an effective solution to have a child.
After hearing about the plight of King Priyavrat, Maharishi Kashyap organized a grand yagya at the king’s house to have a son. Maharishi Kashyap ordered to build a Kheeb for the Yagya offering. Then Maharishi Kashyap asked to feed the kheer prepared for the offering to King Priyavrat’s wife, Malini. The king gave that kheer to his wife. Due to the effect of that kheer, the queen became pregnant. Then after 9 months, the queen was blessed with a son, but he was stillborn. Seeing this, the king and his wife became even more sad. After this, King Priyavrat went to the crematorium with his dead son and due to separation from his son, he tried to commit suicide.
At the same time a goddess appeared in the crematorium. The Goddess told King Priyavrat that I am Devasena, daughter of Brahma and since I was born from the sixth part of the original nature of the universe, I am called Shashthi. Tell me the reason for your concern. The king told the whole story. After hearing the king’s grief, Shashthi Devi told King Priyavrat that if you worship me properly and inspire others to worship me, I will definitely give you the blessing of having a son.
The king had a son
As per the orders of the Goddess, the king observed a fast in the Shashthi Tithi month of Shukla of Kartik and worshiped Shashthi Devi according to the rituals. He also inspired his subjects to worship goddess Shashthi. As a result of the worship of Shashthi Devi, the king’s wife, Queen Malini, became pregnant once again and after 9 months she was blessed with a son, Ratna. It is said that after this, Chhath Puja and fasting began in Shashthi Tithi month of Shukla of Kartik.
Karna also offered Arghya to the Sun God.
According to mythological stories described in religious texts, during the Mahabharata period, Danveer Karna, son of Mother Kunti, also offered water to the Sun God. Apart from mother Kunti, Karna is also considered the son of the Sun God. The Sun God He had special blessings for the charitable Karna. It is said that Karna used to wake up every morning, stay in the water for hours and offer Arghya to the Sun God. By the grace of the Sun God, Karna became a great warrior.

According to this story, in Mahabharata, when the Pandavas lost their entire kingdom in gambling, Draupadi also observed Chhath fasting. Pleased with the fasting and worship of Draupadi, Shashti Maiya returned her kingdom to the Pandavas.
