A local court has sentenced a 70-year-old woman to life imprisonment for the crime of burning her daughter-in-law alive in Maharajganj district of Uttar Pradesh. Additional Sessions Judge Pawan Kumar Srivastava on Tuesday sentenced Kaushalya Devi, convicted of murdering her daughter-in-law Aarti Gaur (23) for not meeting her dowry demand, to life imprisonment. Government lawyer Santosh Kumar Mishra said the criminal burnt her daughter-in-law alive by throwing oil on her.

The government lawyer said that based on the complaint of Jai Prakash Gaur, the father of the deceased woman, a case was registered against Kaushalya Devi under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Nine people testified during the case hearing. The court later sentenced the culprit to life imprisonment.

As their dowry demand was not met, the accused murdered the victim on February 6, 2021. Rope marks were found on the victim’s neck in the autopsy.
