Online fraudsters have defrauded the people of Mizoram of Rs 8 crore from January to September this year. A police officer said that around 80 per cent of cyber crime cases are online financial frauds. The maximum money loss of people to fraudsters was Rs 2.57 crore in July and Rs 1.59 crore in March.
A senior official said recovering money from fraudsters remains a challenge as only 10 per cent of the defrauded money has been recovered so far. Among online frauds, the most common in Mizoram is the ‘Army Scam’, in which fraudsters pose as military personnel and call victims. They grab money under the pretext of selling products at cheap prices.
He said that most of the cybercriminals operate their activities from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed seriousness about these cyber fraud cases.
