Cyclonic storm Fangal is expected to reach Tamil Nadu today. Due to this, there is a chance of heavy rain here. In view of this, Indigo Airlines issued a travel advisory on Tuesday evening, stating that flights to and from Chennai, Tuticorin and Madurai are being affected, while Tiruchirappalli and Salem may also be affected now.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal has recently moved northwards at a speed of 10 kilometers per hour. As of 11:30 pm on Tuesday, the deep depression was 190 km southeast of Trincomalee, 470 km southeast of Nagapattinam, 580 km southeast of Puducherry and 670 km southeast of Chennai.
The Meteorological Department said this deep depression could further strengthen into a cyclonic storm on Wednesday and then move northwestwards towards the Tamil Nadu coast, passing the Sri Lanka coast. Apart from this, the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) in Chennai said the deep depression in the Bay of South West Bengal is likely to develop into a cyclonic storm on Wednesday.
Red alert issued in Tamil Nadu
Chennai and its suburbs have been receiving torrential rains since Tuesday morning. The IMD has forecast light to moderate rains for the region, with isolated heavy rains at times. This rain may continue until November 28. The India Meteorological Department has issued several warnings for Tamil Nadu. A red alert for extremely heavy rain was issued in three central districts on November 26, while heavy rain is expected in two districts on November 27. Apart from this, a yellow alert has been issued for Chennai from November 27 to 29, in which heavy rainfall is expected. Yellow and orange alert was issued in other districts of Tamil Nadu like Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpet from November 27 to 30. The meteorological department also said that light to moderate rain could occur over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on November 28. Additionally, in some places there is a possibility of storms and lightning.
