Daniel Barenboim and Ali Abu Awwad
Famed pianist Daniel Barenboim and peace activist Ali Abu Awwad on Tuesday jointly received the Indira Gandhi Prize-2023 for Peace, Disarmament and Development. Barenboim and Awwad have dedicated their lives to promoting harmony between the Israeli and Palestinian people through the non-violent means of music, dialogue and public participation. The award winners were selected by former Chief Justice of India, TS Thakur.
Talented classical pianist and conductor born in Argentina. He is also known for his tireless efforts to use music to promote harmony in Western Asia. Not only has he left an indelible mark on the world of classical music, but he has also become a ray of hope in the search for harmony in Western Asia. His efforts to use music as a means to promote cultural understanding and peaceful cooperation have brought him international fame.
Abu Awwad is inspired by Gandhi’s principles
Ali Abu Awwad is a renowned Palestinian peace activist who works tirelessly with the people of Palestine and Israel to achieve a peaceful resolution to the current conflict in the Middle East. Abu Awwad was born in 1972 and grew up in a refugee family. Unable to see each other while in prison for three years, Ali and his mother went on a 17-day hunger strike, which resulted in them being allowed to meet. This success was a significant moment for Abu Awwad, when he realized that the goals of freedom and dignity could only be achieved through non-violence and following Gandhian principles.

Ali Abu Awwad, receiving the Indira Gandhi Peace Prize, said he learned about the power of non-violence while in prison.
