Story of Dev Uthani Ekadashi (Dev Uthani Ekadashi vrat Katha):
According to the story told in religious texts, in one state no one, from people to animals, consumed food on the day of Ekadashi. One day, Lord Vishnu thought of testing the king, he disguised himself as a beautiful woman and sat on the roadside. When the king met Sundari, he asked him the reason for sitting here. The woman said she was homeless. The king was fascinated by her beauty and said that you should become a queen and come with me to the palace.
The condition was put before the king to the beautiful woman that she would accept the proposal only if she was granted the rights of the entire kingdom and the king would have to eat whatever she prepared. The king accepted the condition. The next day, on Ekadashi, Sundari ordered to sell food in the markets like other days. She prepared non-vegetarian food and forced the king to eat it. The king said that today, during the Ekadashi fast, I only eat fruits. The queen reminded the king of the condition and told him that if he did not eat this vengeful meal, she would behead the eldest prince.
The king told his situation to the eldest queen. The eldest queen asked the king to follow her religion and agreed to behead her son. The king was desperate and agreed to hand over the prince’s head if Sundari did not listen. Shri Hari in the form of a beautiful woman was very happy to see the king’s dedication towards religion and he came in his royal form and appeared before the king.
Vishnu ji told the king that you have succeeded in my exam, tell me what blessing you want. The king thanked God for this life and said now save me. Sri Hari accepted the king’s prayer and after his death went to Bankuth Lok.
